Biography

Naoto OHTAKE is a Director-General of the Institute of Innovative Research (IIR), the Tokyo Institute of Technology (Tokyo Tech) from April 2022. He graduated from the Graduate School of Tokyo Tech with a Master’s degree of Mechanical Engineering in 1988, and later received a Doctor’s degrees in the field of mechanical engineering from Tokyo Tech in 1992. From 1992 to 2006, he was with the Department of Mechanical Engineering of Tokyo Tech, first as research associate, next as associate professor. From 2006 to 2009, he was with the Department of Materials, Physics and Energy Engineering of Nagoya University, as associate professor. From 2009 to 2010, he was with the Department of Mechanical Engineering of Tokyo Tech, as associate professor. He has been a Professor at Tokyo Tech since 2010, and served Advisor to the President from 2012 to 2015 and Vice President for Research Promotion & Development from 2015 to 2018.

His main field of interest is surface science, including chemical vapor deposition and physical vapor deposition of hard carbon films and its application to industrial uses. He was taking a charge of project leader of “Carbon based films – Classification and designation” in ISO TC 107 from 2015 to 2017.
